About Church of St Mary the Virgin

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an active Church of England parish church in Wendens Ambo, near Saffron Walden in Essex. It formerly served Great Wenden, which joined with Little Wenden in 1662 to create the present parish. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building for its architectural, historic and landscape significance.

A wooden place of worship may have occupied the site from the eighth century, although nothing of it survives. The present stone building dates from around the late eleventh century, with additions made during the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its earliest surviving element is the tower, generally considered Norman but possibly dating from before the Conquest. Distinctive round openings in the tower resemble examples from late Anglo-Saxon churches. The building also includes an aisled nave, chancel, organ chamber, south porch and a spire of the type associated with Hertfordshire. Unusually, the vestry occupies the west end of the southern aisle.
