About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Lenham, Kent. It holds Grade I listed status and is included on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
Construction began in the 12th century, with further work carried out over the following three centuries. Local ragstone and flint form much of the building, beneath pitched roofs covered with plain tiles. The three-stage tower dates from the 15th century and has corner buttresses, battlements, gargoyles and a large west window. A north aisle, chapel, vestry and timber-gabled porch reflect several medieval phases. The chancel’s east end was reconstructed in knapped flint in 1867. Inside are a piscina from the 13th century, an octagonal 15th-century font, medieval stalls and a wall painting from about 1350 showing St Michael weighing souls. The church also contains monuments dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
