About Church of St Edmund and St Mary, Ingatestone
The Church of St Edmund and St Mary, Ingatestone serves as the Church of England parish church for Ingatestone in Essex, within the parish of Ingatestone and Fryerning. Dating from the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Founded in the 11th century, the church underwent substantial alterations during the 17th century. Its 83-foot west tower is built from red brick, with dark Tudor-patterned decoration, angled buttresses and a battlemented top. Beside the west entrance stands part of a sarsen stone, whose two other sections remain near Fryerning Lane. A chapel adjoining the chancel houses monuments to members of the Petre family of nearby Ingatestone Hall, including William Petre and Anne Browne, as well as John Petre, the first Baron Petre, and his wife.
