About St John's Church, Duxford
St John’s Church, Duxford is a former Anglican place of worship dedicated to John the Baptist, located in Duxford, Essex. Protected at Grade I, it has been under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust since 1979 and welcomes visitors every day.
Its oldest surviving parts are the nave, chancel and central tower, all begun towards the end of the 1100s. The tower gained additional height and the chancel was enlarged in the next century. A northern chapel appeared around 1330, followed by an aisle and porch during the 1400s. Flint, clunch and pebbles form much of the fabric, with stone trim and later patches of brickwork. The tower carries a small lead-clad spire whose distinctive twist resulted from storm damage after a flagpole was attached for Victoria’s 1897 jubilee. Notable interior details include Romanesque arches, an octagonal font from the 1200s, medieval seating and historic painted scenes. Partial conservation of the paintings and tower took place in 1985.
