About Parish Church of St Peter
The Parish Church of St Peter is an active Church of England parish church in Duxford, Essex. Dedicated to St Peter by 1275, it became the village’s only parish church when its parish was united with that of nearby St John’s in 1874. The building has held Grade I listed status since 1967 and remains open each day for visitors and individual prayer.
The church was in use by the early twelfth century. Its plan includes an aisled nave with clerestory, a chancel and a western tower. The tower and sections of the chancel survive from the earliest fabric, while the nave dates from rebuilding during the fourteenth or fifteenth century. A shorter spire replaced its taller predecessor in 1728. Ewan Christian directed extensive restoration between 1884 and 1891. Notable features include twentieth-century east and west windows by F. C. Eden, further stained glass by James Powell & Sons, and six bells, most transferred from St John’s in 1947.
