About Thorndon Park Chapel

Thorndon Park Chapel, also known as the Petre Chapel, is a former private Roman Catholic chapel in Thorndon Park, Brentwood, near Thorndon Hall and Ingrave. Now cared for by the Historic Chapels Trust, the church is designated Grade II*.

William Wardell designed the building around 1850 as a chantry and burial chapel for the Petre family of Thorndon Hall, with its dedication following in 1857. Built of Kentish ragstone with freestone details and a tiled roof, it follows the Decorated Gothic style. Its L-shaped layout includes three bays, a vestry and an ornate octagonal bellcote. Notable interior features include a richly embellished roof with gilded angels, stone panels depicting the Stations of the Cross, and a stone altar set into the eastern wall beneath a carved reredos. Some stained glass by Hardman has been placed in storage. After falling into disuse and deteriorating, the chapel was transferred by Lord Petre to the Trust in 2010.
