About North Leith Parish Church

North Leith Parish Church is a former Church of Scotland parish church at 1a Madeira Place in Leith, Edinburgh. The congregation joined with South Leith Parish Church in March 2024, forming North and South Leith Parish Church and moving to the South Leith building. The North Leith church is protected as a Category A listed building.

The present church was designed by William Burn and completed in 1816, replacing an earlier building that had become too small. Its neoclassical frontage has a portico supported by four Ionic columns, with a clock tower and narrow spire rising above. Built to seat 1,300 people, it received a Wadsworth pipe organ in 1880. Bombing damaged the building in 1941, and repairs were completed by 1950. The parish’s origins extend to St Ninian’s Chapel, constructed in 1493, while a subsequent church opened in 1586 and became North Leith’s parish church in 1606.
