Barclay Viewforth Parish Church is an active Church of Scotland parish church at 1 Wright’s Houses, where Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield and Tollcross districts meet. The church, its halls and the former church officer’s house are protected as Category A listed buildings. It also provides a home for Edinburgh Chinese Christian Church and its Cantonese-speaking congregation.
Frederick Thomas Pilkington designed the church, which was begun in 1862 and finished in 1864, supported chiefly by a £10,000 legacy from Mary Barclay. The congregation first worshipped there on 23 December 1864. Its 250-foot spire forms a prominent part of Edinburgh’s skyline. Inside, a heart-shaped auditorium contains ground-level seating and two gallery tiers, originally accommodating 1,200 people. Pilkington also designed the marble pulpit beneath the organ pipes. The organ was made by R. Hope-Jones in 1896 and has since undergone two rebuilds. Sydney Mitchell added the eastern halls in 1891, using matching stone and a style sympathetic to the original building.
