About St Andrew's Church, Waterloo Street, Hove
St Andrew's Church, Waterloo Street, Hove, is a former Anglican chapel in Hove’s Brunswick Town district, East Sussex. Designated Grade I in 1950, it ceased regular use in 1990. The Churches Conservation Trust now looks after the building, which hosts occasional services, community gatherings and other events.
Charles Barry designed the church, where work began in April 1827 before its consecration in July 1828. Established to serve people living on the expanding Brunswick estate, it later attracted prominent members of society, including royalty. Its western frontage pioneered Italianate church architecture in England. In 1882, Barry’s son Edward Middleton Barry enlarged the building with a new chancel and sanctuary, incorporating Ionic pillars and a lit dome. The original organ has been removed, but its casing remains. Alterations in the 1920s introduced coloured windows, a marble baptismal font, ornamental coverings for the font and altar, and an expanded altar enclosure. Repairs completed during 2001 and 2002 followed damage caused in the preceding decade.
