About Church in the Wood
Church in the Wood, formally St Leonard’s Church, is a Church of England parish church in Hollington, Hastings. Surrounded by ancient woodland despite the growth of the neighbouring suburb, it retains the secluded setting for which it has long been known. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The present church dates from the middle of the 13th century and probably replaced an earlier chapel recorded on the site by the late 11th century. Originally dedicated to St Rumbold, it gradually became associated with St Leonard after worshippers from a lost medieval Hastings church began attending here. Its Early English Gothic character was substantially reshaped by Victorian restoration. Following serious deterioration, repairs began in 1847, with further work in 1861 and a comprehensive restoration funded by Matilda Dampner in 1865. It reopened the following year, retaining only limited medieval and Norman-period fabric.
