About Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Scrayingham
The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is an active Church of England parish church in Scrayingham, East Riding of Yorkshire. Grade II* protection was granted in 2013. Its early fabric means it could be the oldest building still standing within the historic East Riding.
The nave retains substantial sections of eighth-century masonry on its northern and western sides, including stone taken from Roman structures. The chancel dates from a 14th-century reconstruction. In 1853, G. T. Andrews directed major alterations, enlarging the nave, replacing its southern wall and renewing the chancel windows, while adding a vestry and bellcote. Gritstone and magnesian limestone form the building, which is roofed in grey slate. Notable details include two sealed Saxon openings, stained glass by Clayton and Bell, a memorial dated 1638, and John Loughborough Pearson’s large brass chandelier. George Hudson lies buried in the surrounding churchyard.
