About Church of St Martin, Burton Agnes
The Church of St Martin is the Church of England parish church for Burton Agnes, near Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Originating around 1050, it retains the highest level of statutory protection as a Grade I listed building, a designation granted in 1966.
Parts of the nave survive from the 11th century, while the northern arcade was introduced during the following century. Later additions include a chantry of 1313 and a 15th-century clerestory and western tower. Restoration took place in the 18th century, followed by extensive rebuilding in 1840. Magnesian limestone forms most of the structure, although the chancel is brick. Inside are a recut Norman font, a wooden pulpit from about 1700 and box pews from the 18th century. Notable memorials include medieval tombs for Roger and Maud de Somerville, and Walter Griffith and Jane Nevill. Chancel glass was designed by William Wailes, with work by Charles Eamer Kempe in the southern aisle.
