About Church of St Leonard
The Church of St Leonard is an active Church of England parish church in Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire. Recognised for its architectural and historic importance, it has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.
Its origins may reach back to the 11th century, although most surviving fabric dates from the 13th century onwards. Fifteenth-century work introduced the side aisles, southern porch and western tower, while the chancel was altered. Further changes included brick reconstruction in the chancel in 1719, a northern aisle and chapel designed by H. F. Lockwood in 1846, and a vestry completed in 1859. Built from stone, cobbles and brick beneath slate roofing, the church has a three-level tower crowned by a pierced parapet and eight crocketed pinnacles. Interior features include trefoil-headed seating for clergy from the 13th century, an octagonal font dating to the 1400s, and a medieval priestly effigy. Most windows received clear glazing in 1939.
