About Church of St Mary and St Benedict

The Church of St Mary and St Benedict serves Buckland Brewer, close to Bideford in northern Devon, as an active Anglican parish church. It is included in the Hartland Coast Team Ministry and the Diocese of Exeter. The building has been designated Grade II* since 1958.

A church was probably established here around 1100, although the present structure largely dates from rebuilding undertaken about 1399 after an earlier fire. Its medieval fabric includes a richly carved Norman entrance, a fifteenth-century porch and a three-stage western tower measuring 76 feet. The walls are chiefly laid in dressed slatestone, while finer ashlar blocks were used for the tower. Following storm damage in 1877, Samuel Hooper oversaw substantial renovations from 1878 to 1880. Other notable elements include the fourteenth-century Orleigh Chapel with its memorials, a locally quarried stone font made in 1771, and six bells last recast in 1899.
