About Church of St Sampson
The Church of St Sampson serves the Church of England parish at South Hill in Cornwall. Consecrated in 1333 where a previous chapel had stood, it remains the parish church and holds Grade I protection.
Its earliest fabric comprises the chancel, nave, northern transept and the bottom portions of the tower at the west end. Expansion during the fifteenth century introduced a four-bay aisle on the south, a southern porch and another tower stage. Much of the structure uses rubble masonry, complemented by dressed granite on the porch and tower, beneath slate roofing. Inside are medieval king-post timbers and painted wagon ceilings, alongside a Norman baptismal font decorated with foliage, creatures and the Chi-Rho device. Further historic details include two Gothic burial niches from around the 1330s and memorials connected with the Manaton family and Michael Hill. Restoration was undertaken in 1871. A sixth-century stone bearing a Christian inscription stands within the burial ground.
