About St Bartholomew’s Church, Clay Cross
St Bartholomew’s Church, Clay Cross is an active Church of England parish church in the Chesterfield area of Derbyshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building and forms part of a joint parish with churches in North Wingfield, Danesmoor, Woolley Moor, Pilsley and Tupton.
Work began in August 1849, and the building was designed by Henry Isaac Stevens. Samuel Watts of Derby and a Clay Cross contractor, Mr Kirkland, carried out the construction. The Bishop of Lichfield consecrated the church in January 1851. Its spire was finished in 1856, with a weather vane added to commemorate the end of the Crimean War. George Edmund Street designed the vestry, completed in 1859. Notable features include a Morris & Co. memorial window dedicated to railway engineer William Howe and six bells made by John Taylor & Co. in 1937. An 1894 pipe organ was later altered and has since been replaced electronically.
