About Bardon Park Chapel
Bardon Park Chapel is a historic Christian meeting house on Shaw Lane in Coalville, Leicestershire. Set back from the road near the edge of the former Bardon deer park, it is surrounded by an extensive burial ground. The chapel is Grade II listed and continues to serve a small congregation within the Free Church tradition.
Built following the 1689 Act of Toleration, the meeting house was established by John Hood of Bardon Hall for Protestant dissenters. Its square interior has galleries along three walls, a tall pulpit on the north side and a pair of round-headed windows. Remodelling in 1877 significantly changed the exterior and introduced the present gabled roof, while the current galleries were installed in 1905. Memorials of slate remain behind the pulpit, and an opening casement allowed coffins to pass into the building. A nineteenth-century schoolroom at the rear retains a painted alphabet panel dated 1848.
