About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church serves the Anglican parish of Wreay, within St Cuthbert Without in Cumbria. The church was completed in 1842 and continues in parish use. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through its designation at Grade II*.

Sara Losh paid for and designed the present building, erected during 1840–42 as a memorial to her sister Katharine and replacing Wreay’s former church. Its distinctive design is considered the first identified British instance of the Lombard style being revived, while also incorporating elements associated with France. A plain oblong nave leads to a rounded sanctuary at the east end. William Hindson, a young stonemason from the area, created abundant decoration featuring wildlife and vegetation, including insects, birds, flowers, leaves, grain and pine cones. Losh provided an altar positioned away from the wall, enabling the celebrant to look towards worshippers during Communion. Outside stand Katharine’s tomb, with David Dunbar’s full-scale marble likeness, and a reproduction of the Bewcastle Cross.
