About St Lawrence's Church, Crosby Ravensworth
St Lawrence’s Church in Crosby Ravensworth, Cumbria, is a Church of England place of worship that continues to serve its parish. It forms part of the Carlisle diocese and is joined with five neighbouring churches in the Leith-Lyvennet group. Its exceptional historic and architectural importance is recognised through Grade I listing.
Fabric around the crossing survives from approximately 1190 to 1200, with the southern entrance and nave arches added during the following century. Stone walls and slate roofing enclose a nave, aisles, chancel, transepts and a battlemented western tower. Robert Smirke was associated with alterations undertaken in 1811–12, while J. S. Crowther directed substantial Victorian rebuilding from 1848 until 1887. Noteworthy contents include an octagonal font inscribed with the date 1662, stained-glass work by Clayton and Bell and other makers, a Last Supper carved in wood, chapel memorials and an organ first made in 1852–53. Three bells produced in 1823 remain in place but are not ringable.
