About St Eugene's Cathedral

St Eugene’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It serves as the principal church of the Diocese of Derry and as an active parish church for Templemore. Designed by James Joseph McCarthy, it is recognised as a Grade B+ listed building.

Fundraising began in 1840, with contributions from Ireland, Derry and the United States, and construction started in 1849. The neo-Gothic cathedral cost slightly more than £40,000 and opened on 4 May 1873. Financial constraints delayed both its coloured glass and its tower with spire: stained glass was added during the late 1890s, while the tower and spire were completed in 1903. Exterior repairs and additions were undertaken between 1984 and 1988, followed by a major interior reordering in 1989. This work introduced a Sardinian granite sanctuary floor, a Carrara marble altar and a marble lectern, while retaining the original reredos installed in 1904. Further essential repairs began in 2015.
