Derry's walled city holds St Columb's Cathedral, completed in 1633 as the first cathedral built in Britain or Ireland after the Reformation, and the city's very name remembers Colmcille, who founded a monastery here in the sixth century. Churches of every tradition serve both banks of the Foyle.
