About St. Patrick's Church
St. Patrick’s Church is an Anglican parish church on Church Street in Coleraine, County Londonderry. The present building dates from 1614 and remains in parish use. It is recognised for its architectural and historic significance through its designation as a Grade B+ listed building.
Tradition associates the church’s origins with St Patrick in the fifth century, when a local ruler is said to have granted him land beside the northern bank of the River Bann. He reportedly selected a fern-covered place, linked to Cuil Raithin, the name from which Coleraine developed. A church occupied the site by medieval times. Between 1883 and 1885, Sir Thomas Drew remodelled the building in the Victorian Gothic Revival manner, incorporating Celtic Revival decoration, including shamrock designs.
