About Westgate Methodist Chapel
Westgate Methodist Chapel is a redundant place of worship beside the A689 in Westgate, County Durham, around five miles west of Stanhope. Built in 1871, it has Grade II* designation. The chapel closed in 2007 and later underwent partial restoration under the Historic Chapels Trust. In 2026, ownership passed to the charity Trades4Care.
Originally serving Primitive Methodists, the present chapel replaced the village’s first chapel of 1824, which was retained as an adjoining schoolroom. George Race junior and Mr Atkinson designed the sandstone building, which has slate roofing, two storeys and five bays. Inside, galleries extend around the four sides, supported by slender cast-iron columns with Corinthian detailing. Pitch-pine pews remain in both the main body and gallery. A two-manual organ made by Nelson & Co. of Durham around 1920 stands over the west-end pulpit, while the panelled ceiling has decorative plaster leaves, cornices and ventilator roundels.
