About St Cuthbert's Church, Redmarshall
St Cuthbert’s Church, Redmarshall, serves as a Church of England parish church in the village of Redmarshall, within Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham. It remains in regular ecclesiastical use and belongs to the Diocese of Durham. The parish shares a benefice with five neighbouring parishes. The building holds Grade I listed status in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.
Originating in the 12th century, the church gained an enlarged chancel in the 13th century and a southern chantry chapel in 1311. Built from rubble masonry and covered with Westmorland slate, it comprises a nave, south porch, chancel, chapel and western tower, whose parapet is battlemented. Norman work is combined with later Gothic additions. In 1845, Edmund Sharpe installed Perpendicular-style mullioned windows, and the chancel’s eastern window was renewed in 1891. Interior features include a late Norman font, medieval sedilia and Easter tomb recess, 17th-century seating and communion rails, and 15th-century effigies of Thomas de Loughton and his wife.
