About Drumcree Church
Drumcree Church, formally known as the Church of the Ascension, is an active Church of Ireland parish church near Portadown, County Armagh. It occupies a hilltop site in the townland of Drumcree and is protected as a Grade B listed building. The Church of Ireland parish follows the same boundaries as its Roman Catholic counterpart.
Christian worship has taken place on the site since medieval times, when the parish was Roman Catholic. A Protestant church was erected there following the Ulster Plantation, replacing a building shown as ruined in 1609. The foundation stone for the present church was set on Ascension Day, 17 May 1855, and the building was consecrated on 28 October 1856. Later additions included a pipe organ in 1907, a First World War memorial in 1921 and a Second World War memorial in 1989. Substantial repairs to the building were completed in 1992.
