About Newry Cathedral
Newry Cathedral is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Main Street, Newry, County Down. Dedicated to Saint Patrick and Saint Colman, it serves the Bishop of Dromore and is the diocese’s mother church. The cathedral remains an important place of worship and has Grade A listed status.
Newry architect Thomas Duff designed the granite building, which succeeded the earlier Saint Mary’s Church. Work started in 1825, with the principal structure ready for dedication in 1829. It was the earliest Catholic cathedral inaugurated in Ireland following Catholic Emancipation. Later alterations expanded the building: transepts were constructed in 1888, while the bell tower and a replacement sacristy followed in 1890. A high altar was placed in the sanctuary the next year, and the tower received its bells in 1898. The nave was lengthened in 1904 under Bishop Henry O’Neill’s supervision.
