About Ballymore Parish Church

Ballymore Parish Church is a nineteenth-century stone Church of Ireland parish church in Laurelvale, County Armagh. Its roots extend to the medieval period, with the parish recorded in 1343. For centuries, it also had close ties to the Dukes of Manchester, whose support continued until the 1950s.

A fortified church was erected by Oliver St John in 1622, with exceptionally thick walls and a cannon mounted on its tower. After being burned during the rebellion of 1641, it was restored in 1670 and gained a new tower. The building was demolished in 1812 because it could no longer accommodate the congregation, and work on a larger cross-shaped replacement began that March. Transepts and a chancel were added in 1846. Notable fittings include an organ presented by the seventh Duke of Manchester in 1884, tubular bells installed in 1889, stained glass, and timber panelling obtained from Tandragee Castle in 1955. Extensive repairs in 1962 included replacing the roof.
