About Christ Church Cathedral, Lisburn
Christ Church Cathedral, Lisburn stands in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The church serves as the cathedral for the Diocese of Connor and belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Armagh. It shares diocesan cathedral status with St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast. Rising to about 55 metres, it is a prominent landmark and the tallest building in Lisburn.
A chapel dedicated to St Thomas was established on the site in the early seventeenth century for Sir Fulke Conway’s nearby castle. After destruction in the 1641 rebellion, it was rebuilt and became a cathedral in 1662. Another fire destroyed the church in 1707, although the tower survived. Construction of the present building began in 1708 and finished in 1719, retaining galleries within the nave. Its distinctive eight-sided spire dates from 1804, while the chancel was added and consecrated in 1889. A suffragette bomb damaged an early stained-glass window in 1914.
