About St George's Church

St George’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on High Street in Belfast, County Antrim. Opened in 1816, it is the city’s oldest surviving Anglican church and is protected as a Grade A listed building. Parish life includes a long-established musical tradition, a men’s and boys’ choir, and ministry among the city centre’s business and homeless communities.

Designed by Dublin architect John Bowden, the sandstone church has a straightforward nave and chancel layout, with galleries lining three sides. Its foundation stone was placed in 1813, three years before it welcomed its first congregation. The imposing Corinthian portico facing High Street came from Ballyscullion House in County Londonderry and was transported to Belfast by cart and barge. Later alterations included W. J. Barre’s exposed, decorated roof timbers in 1865 and pulpit of 1867, followed by Edward Bradell’s chancel in 1882. Extensive refurbishment was finished in 2000.
