About Saint Anne's Cathedral
Saint Anne’s Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral on Donegall Street in Belfast, County Antrim. This Grade A listed building remains an active place of worship and serves the dioceses of Connor and Down and Dromore. It also stands at the heart of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter.
Sir Thomas Drew designed the cathedral in the Romanesque style, and its foundation stone was laid in 1899. The nave opened for worship in 1904 after construction had taken place around the earlier parish church. A Good Samaritan window survives from that building. Later additions included the choir crossing, a west front commemorating Ulster’s First World War service and losses, a baptistery, transepts and several chapels. Bombing caused serious damage nearby in 1941 but narrowly spared the cathedral. A four-manual Harrison and Harrison organ dates from 1907 and was rebuilt between 1969 and 1975. The 40-metre stainless-steel Spire of Hope was added in 2007.
