About Saint Thomas' Church
Saint Thomas' Church is an active parish church on Eglantine Avenue in south Belfast, County Antrim, near its meeting with Lisburn Road. It belongs to the Church of England Churches denomination and serves a parish covering parts of the surrounding area. The church is protected as a Grade B+ listed building.
Funded through a bequest from Andrew Thomas McClean, the church was designed by John Lanyon. Construction began in 1869, and it was consecrated in December 1870. Its High Victorian Gothic design uses white Scrabo sandstone, red sandstone bands and coloured marble detailing. Because of the sloping ground, the chancel unusually points north. An 1888 extension lengthened the nave and aisles, while adding a porch and internal gallery. Inside are carved stonework, mosaics, around 45 stained-glass windows and panels, and original iron lighting. The 1874 Hill organ was expanded in 1906, while eight bells have occupied the tower since 1870. A substantial refurbishment followed in 2008.
