About Gracehill Moravian Church
Gracehill Moravian Church stands in the planned settlement of Gracehill, near Ballymena in County Antrim. Founded in 1759, it formed the focal point of a village arranged with separate areas for men and women on either side. The church is Grade A listed, a designation held since 1975. Gracehill became Northern Ireland’s earliest conservation area, and the church and village gained World Heritage status in 2024.
The church originally owned every building in the settlement. Its interior includes an elevated pulpit positioned against the building’s longest wall, underlining the Moravian emphasis on preaching, while a prominent organ occupies one of the galleries. During the 1798 rebellion, the congregation resisted pressure to participate, although one member joined the insurgents. It later sheltered rebels escaping government troops. Gracehill also preserved official documents for Moravian congregations across Ireland, including churches in Dublin.
