About Dromore Cathedral
Dromore Cathedral is an Anglican place of worship in Dromore, County Down, Northern Ireland. Formally dedicated to Christ the Redeemer, it functions both as a parish church serving roughly 600 families and as one of the Diocese of Down and Dromore’s two cathedrals. The church remains in regular use and is protected as a Grade B1 listed building.
Worship began here around 510, when St Colman established an early church made from woven timber and clay near the River Lagan. Its medieval successor was destroyed towards the end of the sixteenth century. After receiving cathedral rank in 1609, the replacement was also lost during the unrest of 1641. Bishop Jeremy Taylor commissioned the core of today’s building in 1661. Subsequent work included the Percy aisle in 1811, Thomas Drew’s rounded sanctuary in 1870 and the Harding aisle in 1899. A Conacher organ dating from 1871 underwent reconstruction in 2008–09.
