About Tintagel Parish Church

Tintagel Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Materiana, serves the Church of England community in the Diocese of Truro. It occupies a coastal position above the cliffs separating Trevena from Tintagel Castle. Still functioning as the local parish church, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building.

A church may first have occupied this site during the sixth century, while the surviving structure is thought to originate from around the end of the eleventh century or the beginning of the twelfth. Predominantly Norman in design, it also displays features considered Saxon in character. Its medieval fabric includes two Norman doorways, three windows from the same period and an elvan font carved with serpents and human heads. The western tower dates from the fourteenth century, with its battlements added later. Restoration led by Piers St Aubyn in 1870 provided a replacement roof. Further points of interest include medieval screens and altars, saint-themed stained glass, a Roman inscribed stone and six bells made between 1735 and 1945.
