About St Piran's Chapel
St Piran’s Chapel is a Church of England place of worship at Trethevy, in Tintagel parish, Cornwall. It functions as a chapel of ease within the Anglican parish of Tintagel and forms part of the Boscastle and Tintagel parish group. This Grade II listed building remains in ecclesiastical use for services held from time to time.
Its existence is recorded in 1457, when parish priest John Gregory was authorised to conduct Mass there. Following the Reformation, the structure served agricultural purposes, and the wall height was reduced in the later nineteenth century. Sidney Harris transferred it to the Church of England in 1941, allowing the Revd Edward Arundell and mason George Climo to undertake restoration. Mass returned in February 1944. The elongated, ground-floor building is made of slate. Surviving details include an eastern lancet with a three-lobed top, a rudimentary stone fitting that may be a piscina, and stained glass showing St Piran in Rocky Valley.
