About Church of St Swithin
The Church of St Swithin is a Church of England parish church in Stratton, Cornwall. Dating chiefly from the later medieval period, it remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building, a designation awarded in 1985.
A church was established here by 1086, and the dedication changed from St Andrew to St Swithin in 1321. The present stone building developed between the 14th and 17th centuries, with granite detailing, slate roofs and a mainly Perpendicular Gothic design. Its plan includes a chancel, five-bay aisles, a south porch and a battlemented three-stage western tower. Notable survivals include around 60 carved 16th-century bench ends, medieval Barnstaple tiles, a 12th-century font and wall paintings. The interior also contains the tomb effigy of Sir John Charmond, historic glazing and six bells, including two cast in 1751.
