About Mortuary Chapels
The Mortuary Chapels stand within the cemetery at St Columb Major in Cornwall. This paired group is protected as a Grade II listed building. The surrounding burial ground continues to serve the town and neighbouring communities, remains open for burials and is cared for by St Columb Major Town Council.
Dating from about 1856, the chapels were built when extra burial provision was needed because the parish churchyard had reached capacity. One served Anglican funerals, while the other was intended for Nonconformists, among them Methodists. Constructed from granite in the Gothic Revival manner, the buildings form a notable feature of the cemetery. The wider site also contains Commonwealth war graves, including a group connected with the nearby wartime base at RAF St Eval.
