About Our Lady and St Anne's Church, Widemouth Bay

Our Lady and St Anne’s Church is a compact Church of England place of worship in Widemouth Bay, in the parish of Poundstock, Cornwall. It serves as a chapel of ease for the local community. The grounds have an unmarked garden and a wooden summerhouse, erected by worshippers in 2006 as a venue for community gatherings.

The church dates to 1929 and was first used as a private oratory on another site within Widemouth Bay. Its origins are uncertain. It may have been intended for the priests Claude, Reginald and Frank Kingdom as a summer retreat where they prepared sermons, or commissioned by Miss Kirby and Miss Topham, who gave the brothers annual access. Following the resort’s growth in the following decade, the light structure was relocated in 1940 to land secured by Poundstock’s vicar. Its unusually small scale was recognised in Dixe Wills’s 2016 volume on diminutive churches.
