About Church of St Cuthbert by the Forest
The Church of St Cuthbert by the Forest stands in Mouldsworth, Cheshire. It remains in use for Roman Catholic worship within the Diocese of Shrewsbury, sharing its parish with St Thomas Becket in Tarporley. Designed by F. X. Velarde, it is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Catholic services began locally in 1926, initially taking place in a pavilion behind the former Station Hotel. The hotel’s owners later donated a nearby plot to the diocese, and the present church opened in September 1955. Built of brick with artificial-stone detailing and Staffordshire-tile roofs, it combines Arts and Crafts influences with Gothic and Germanic elements. The compact interior accommodates 72 people and includes angel-carved window divisions, cathedral glass and wooden Stations of the Cross made in South Tyrol. A separate brick bell tower, almost 44 feet high, is capped by a copper pyramidal roof. The interior was reorganised in 1976.
