About St Martin's Church
St Martin’s Church stands in Preston Gubbals, Shropshire. Formerly used for Anglican worship, it was formally closed in 1973 and transferred to the Churches Conservation Trust the following year. The building is listed at Grade II*.
The surviving fabric began as a chapel serving the medieval parish church and was likely remodelled in either the 1300s or 1400s. In 1866, Samuel Pountney Smith designed a £1,600 extension that turned the older chancel into a southern aisle. Most of his addition was taken down in 1973, although its sealed three-arch arcade remains as the present northern wall. The compact sandstone structure has a tiled covering and includes a priest’s doorway dating from the 1100s. Inside are numerous timber fittings carved by the nineteenth-century vicar, E. D. Poole, an eight-sided stone font probably made in the 1500s, and a medieval coffin lid depicting a man above a cross decorated with foliage.
