About St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Chester
St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Chester is an active Church of England parish church in the Garden Quarter, a well-populated part of Chester near the university. It serves St Oswald’s parish, which can trace its history to about AD 980, with surviving registers beginning in 1580. The church sits within the Diocese of Chester and holds Grade II heritage status.
The present church arose from plans made in 1868 to provide additional worship space for an expanding population. George Gilbert Scott designed it in an Early English Gothic manner, with work progressing between 1869 and its consecration in 1872. The original layout featured a nave divided into three bays, flanking aisles, and a chancel accompanied by an aisle to the south. When it assumed parish church duties in 1881, J. O. Scott designed an enlargement adding two further bays, a northern porch, vestries and space for the organ. An intended tower and spire remained unfinished. Charles Deacon’s altar screen followed in 1909.
