About St Philip's Church, Kelsall
St Philip's Church, Kelsall is a Church of England place of worship in Kelsall, Cheshire, near Chester. It remains an active parish church within the Chester deanery, archdeaconry and diocese. The building is protected with Grade II listed status.
Completed in 1860, the church was designed by Nantwich architect Thomas Bower in the Decorated Gothic style. Sandstone walls support a Welsh slate roof finished with a ridge of red tiles. Its layout includes a nave of four bays, a south porch, a two-bay chancel and a vestry on the north side. A bellcote rises above the nave’s eastern end, while buttresses separate the side windows. Among the varied window designs are trefoil and quatrefoil forms, paired lancets in the chancel, and larger east and west windows. Nicholson and Lord made the two-manual organ in 1900. The churchyard includes war graves for two First World War soldiers and two Second World War airmen.
