About St Olave's Church, Chester
St Olave’s Church, Chester is on Lower Bridge Street in Chester, Cheshire. Once an Anglican parish church, it no longer serves its original parish role and is listed at Grade II. Following its closure, the premises accommodated a school, the Pentecostal congregation known as Chester Revival Centre, and exhibitions.
Established in the eleventh century, it honours St Olaf, the Norwegian patron saint of that period. Its dedication is believed to relate to the many Scandinavians who lived nearby when it began. The surviving structure was completed in 1611. After the parish joined St Michael’s in 1841, James Harrison carried out restoration work in 1849 and refitted the interior for schooling. The rectangular building is formed from red sandstone and covered by grey slate. Its west end contains the doorway, a triple-light window and a gabled bell opening. Ten steps approach the entrance from St Olave’s Street. The protected fabric also encompasses the front boundary wall and iron railings.
