About St John the Baptist's Church, Chester
St John the Baptist’s Church, Chester stands beyond the historic walls, on raised ground above the Dee. It belongs to the Church of England and continues to serve a parish within the Diocese of Chester. The church has Grade I protection. Formerly a cathedral, it accommodated the Lichfield bishopric in Chester during the late 11th century before the episcopal centre moved to Coventry.
Its origins are traditionally traced to 689, while substantial construction took place from the 11th century onwards. Sandstone was used throughout, and the interior preserves notable Norman stonework in the nave, crossing, chancel and entrance to the Lady Chapel. Ruined sections east of the present structure survive from the larger medieval complex. Richard Charles Hussey oversaw major Victorian restoration in 1859–66 and 1886–87. After part of the north-west tower fell in 1881, John Douglas reconstructed the porch and subsequently created the north-east bell tower. Damaged medieval effigies and Warburton family memorials remain inside.
