About St James' Church, Christleton
St James' Church, Christleton stands in the village of Christleton, near Chester in Cheshire. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Chester and is protected at Grade II*. It is the only church in Cheshire designed by William Butterfield.
A place of worship may have occupied the site by the time of Domesday. The building was reconstructed in stone in about 1490, leaving a west tower that survives today. Following Civil War damage and later repairs, a partial roof collapse in 1873 led to Butterfield’s rebuilding of 1874–78. Red and white dressed sandstone forms the walls, beneath green slate roofing. Notable details include the tower’s gargoyles and shingled cap, an alabaster and mosaic reredos, Minton chancel tiles and stained glass by Gibbs and Kempe. The church also contains a Jacobean altar table, a George Holdich organ and eight bells cast in 1928.
