About St Francis' Church, Chester

St Francis’ Church, Chester, stands on Grosvenor Street in Chester, Cheshire. It remains an active Roman Catholic parish church within the Diocese of Shrewsbury and is served by the Capuchin Franciscans. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Construction began in 1862 using plans by Benjamin Bucknell. Following difficulties during the project, James O’Byrne oversaw its completion in 1874–75. Built of red sandstone, it has a roof laid with alternating grey and purple slate. The broad interior has no aisles, while recesses within the substantial walls accommodate chapels and confessionals. Notable exterior details include a western porch, Geometric tracery and a canopied figure of Saint Francis. An organ made by Gray and Davison in 1893, and enlarged by the firm a year later, stands in the west gallery. Rod Billingsley restored it around 1998.
