About St Barnabas' Church, Chester
St Barnabas’ Church, Chester, is a former Anglican mission church on Sibell Street in Chester, Cheshire. Now redundant, it has more recently served as office accommodation. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
John Douglas designed the church and neighbouring curate’s residence in 1877, and construction was completed in 1878. Funded through public donations, it was established for workers who lived near Chester railway station. The brick exterior has stone detailing and a slate roof. Its layout comprises a nave of six bays, a single-bay chancel, a north transept, vestry, western porch and an eight-sided baptistry at the north-west corner. A slender roof spire carries a ball and cross. A covered passage connects the church to the curate’s house, whose brick structure includes a timber-framed frontage. Between 1985 and 1987, the building was used by the Orthodox parish of St Barbara before its members relocated because of its poor condition.
