About St Andrew's Church, Chester

St Andrew’s Church stands on Newgate Street in Chester, Cheshire. Now closed and no longer used for worship, it is protected as a Grade II listed building.

The church originated as a Presbyterian place of worship, constructed from 1857 to 1860 and later occupied by a United Reformed congregation. J. and J. M. Hay worked on the design with James Harrison. A new façade was provided in 1866, funded by Robert Barbour, and Kelly and Edwards reconstructed the main body in 1884. Built of yellow sandstone and brick, with rendered sections and slate roofing, the church has aisles, clerestory windows and an unusual reversed orientation. Architectural details include an octagonal bellcote crowned by a masonry spire, an ornamented pinnacle, lancet windows and a rose window.
