About St Philip's Church, Alderley Edge
St Philip’s Church stands in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, and continues to serve as a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Chester. It is recognised for its special architectural and historic interest with Grade II* listed status.
Manchester architect J. S. Crowther designed the church as his first independent commission. The nave, south aisle and chancel were completed in 1851–52, followed in 1856–57 by the north aisle, an additional western bay and the southwest tower and spire. F. P. Oakley designed the hexagonal vestry, added in 1903. Built from roughly dressed sandstone with finer stone detailing, the Decorated Gothic building has a slate roof laid in three colours. Notable features include a Morris & Co. stained-glass window of 1873, a carved Last Supper reredos from 1903, and panelled furnishings designed by Percy Worthington in 1907. Its Wadsworth organ was rebuilt by Jardine and Company in 1962.
