About St Michael's Church, Tremain
St Michael's Church, Tremain, is a redundant Church of England church in Y Ferwig, Ceredigion. Protected at Grade II*, it was upgraded from Grade II in 2009 and transferred to a conservation charity in 2012 after an application for closure had been made four years earlier.
John Jones designed the present church, which replaced an older building between 1846 and 1848. It is his only known work as sole architect. Local sandstone from Tan-y-Groes was used for the walls, while slate covers the roofs. The layout includes a nave, northern aisle, chancel and southern porch, with a stepped bellcote at the western end and a small eight-sided turret at the north-west corner. Pointed lancet windows appear throughout. Inside, a square grey-stone font from the thirteenth century survives from the previous church, alongside stained-pine pews, pulpit, screen and choir stalls.
